June 24 – Grand juries, meeting in secret, review criminal charges filed by police and prosecutors and investigate possible criminal behavior. Proceedings are often one-sided because the defendant is not present and witnesses are not questioned.
A grand jury can return an indictment if it finds probable cause that a crime was committed and the accused person is responsible. An allegation is an allegation that must then be proven in court.
