A man fights for his life after an early morning collision between a truck and a train.

Emergency services headed south to Geelong just after 6:30am on Monday following reports that a Melbourne-bound V/Line collided with a truck near Barwon Terrace.

The train conductor was uninjured and it is understood that the train was not carrying passengers at the time.

A Victoria Police spokesman said the truck driver received fatal injuries and was expected to be airlifted to hospital.

The collision has disrupted morning traffic, with the Barwon Terrace level crossing closed and commuters gathering on either side.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Transport told the Geelong Advertiser that the coaches would replace trains between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds stations due to the accident.

The circumstances surrounding the collision have yet to be determined and a police investigation is ongoing.
