A suspect accused of putting a North Carolina officer in the hospital after a pipe with a pipe went on the loose, reported Queen City News.

The unnamed Cleveland County deputy was attacked while investigating a suspicious vehicle near Curt Ledford Road, about 55 miles northwest of Charlotte, around 8 a.m. Monday. It was not clear why the officer was investigating the vehicle or if the suspect is the owner of the vehicle.

The deputy fired, WBTV reported, but it is unclear if the bullets hit the suspect, according to the sheriff. It was also not immediately clear if the officer fired before or after he was fired.

The officer was in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office told Queen City News.

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect is a 6-foot-tall white male with full-sleeve tattoos and a tattoo on the left side of his neck. He was last seen wearing boots, black shorts and a white shirt driving a tan Buick sedan, the sheriff’s office told Queen City News.
