Primitive Caveman Workout in the Desert

Cochineal is a natural dye produced from a scale insect that infests opuntia cactus Cochineal has been used as a dye by indigenous cultures since ancient times Ziko is an experienced capoeira artist and used the wood sticks to create an improvised capoeira beat Ziko taught me some basic capoeira moves The basic back and forth footwork in capoeira is called “ginga” Capoeira has African roots that date back to pre-Colombian times Capoeira is a mix of martial art, dance and music that was popularized by slaves in Brazil in the 1500’s Slaves from Africa continued to practice their lethal martial art form in Brazil during colonization period Escapees of slavery used this fighting technique to defend themselves and avoid recapture The African fighting technique was so effective that the new Brazilian colony made the practice illegal The African slaves then disguised this form of fighting by combining it with dance and music Today capoeira is an important tradition of the Brazilian culture and is widely practiced all over the country One of the most basic yet one of the most effective exercise is the push-up The push-up is easy to do, can be performed anywhere and effectively works many muscles of the upper body Boulder lifting is highly effective for increasing explosive strength and targets the legs and back muscles A primitive curling exercise can be made with a wooden stick and a net filled with rocks Additional weight can easily be added I made this net from yucca cordage in a recent video As the sun set we began to hike five kilometers to the hills there in the distance There we sat by the fire while watching the night sky and the desert landscape illuminated by the moon The next day Creosote bush is a common plant of this desert and has great medicinal properties A tea made of the creosote bush is commonly known as chaparral tea Traditionally it was used by indigenous peoples to treat snakebites, stiff joints, tuberculosis and more ailments However, the modern medical community discourages its use claiming that it is toxic to the liver and kidneys I tend to question modern ways and have more faith in the ancient ways These yellow balls are actually fruits of a wild squash called coyote gourd The seeds can be roasted and eaten but the flesh is inedible Coyote gourd The dry fruits were used as toy rattles for children The coyote gourd grows in hot arid deserts of the southwest United States and northwest Mexico Running in deep sand is a terrific workout Crawling like a lizard in soft sand is more difficult and provides a full body workout Boulder lifting and throwing is my favorite exercise After the grueling workout we hoped to cool off at the nearby spring I had visited earlier this year Sadly the spring was dry It hadn’t rained for six months Fortunately we saved water in our bottle gourds
